D2 5U Runs does not turn R or L

I am a newbie. I did get my father's orchard D2 Cat to run but I can only go forward/back. I need to also change fluids. Where do I begin?

I take it that you do know how to drive a crawler, if you are pulling the lever and applying the brake for the same side and it does not turn it would be my guess that the steering clutch/s are not disengaging, if the machine has been parked for a long time it is possible the steering clutch friction plates are stuck to the driving plates and do not release when you pull the lever, first check the clutch adjustment and then the brakes, with the adjustment set right and still not steering its more than likely the clutches are stuck, some people get lucky and they break free by holding the levers back and driving the machine against a solid object such as a tree trunk, other people work them which would not be easy when you can't steer, others fill the clutch compartment with diesel or the like which as a pro engineer I don't approve of because I've spent a lifetime trying to keep oil off dry clutches.

If you have space to run it back and
forth ride brakes hard. Get them
smoking, heating the drums will help
break them free. Brakes will do the
same as tree. Drain any liquid,
tighten adjustment. Once free wash
with gas. Try everything, big job to
disassemble.

Agree with Tom. Ride the brake on one side, that will often break it loose. Dragging something and riding the brake helps too. If it won't work, you can try loading the cavity with diesel and then using the brake/dragging something. Try shocking it too by jabbing the brake repeatedly. You need to keep power to that side so leave the steering clutch engaged. At least you can wash the diesel out if it breaks free. You can try pushing against something solid like ledge or a tree, but that can break things too. If it won't free up...go to You Tube and look up Squatch253 and you can get an idea of what is involved in taking it apart to fix it. Major job.

Ride the brakes and you run the risk of the lining coming off the band, if the lining comes off and you got metal to metal contact between the band and the drum which will cause sparks then the goo of grease and oil in the bottom will catch fire and !!, the advise I give is from a lifetime of experience in the repair business on all sorts of heavy plant, if a customer leaves a machine to us and we burn it instead of repairing it what will happen?, those old wives remedies work great if you have no one to answer to if they go wrong in my case I would be held responsible and the insurance would not pay as it it would be classed as gross negligence and none professional, having said that its your machine and you can do what you choose.
Good luck

number one; have the brake bands and steering clutches adjusted properly; then check if you have braking action when hitting brake while moving. if nothing then brake bands may be shot or full of grease/oil; you may try paint thinner in housings, but
first make sure drain hole is plugged before you pour it in.the paint thinner may loosen up steering clutches if they are seized
