MF 33 Wheel Loader

Recently i bought a mid 70s MF 33 Loader with a 4-248 perkins engine. it has a dead spot on flywheel, also an air problem in the Fuel system from hell.. I can get it bled so it will turn around 1400 RPM and that takes some time and ether.. and then in a blink of an eye lost 100 percent progress and full of air again.. Ive replaced filters a couple times (along with o rings) replaced feed line from tank, lift pump, checked all injector lines nothing seems to be sucking air.. Could it be a injector sticking open and forcing compression back into the fuel system???? Also does this flywheel have a replaceable Ring gear? thank you in advance. Josh

Minnpar has a parts book for it on their site and it shows a replaceable starter ring gear.

If the air is getting it to the fuel filters I lean to the air leak being on the suction side of things. Is the fuel tank vent open? What brand and part number filters are you using, If you are using ones like the WIX 33166 or NAPA 3166 with the slot around the top of them do you have the gaskets installed properly? Its not uncommon for them to get down in the element fuel outlet slot.

Yes on the Perkins 4.248 you can replace the ring gear on the flywheel, the CAV fuel system would usually have a water trap between the tank and lift pump that is a likely place for them to suck air have a look and see if it's got one, it looks like its a filter, usually mounted on the frame, it's got the same o'rings as that are used on the filters, if yours has one make sure its clean and the o'rings are good, if that not the trouble start at the tank, make sure there is a decent flow of fuel coming from it, and to the lift pump, after the lift pump the fuel is under pressure, to bleed the system open the bleed screw/s on top of the filters and the two on the injector pump, prime the lift pump till the first filter is air free and close it, then the second if it has one and close it, prime on till the bottom bleeder on the pump is air free and finish with the top one, prime on till the lift pump goes limp, open each injector pipe at the injector a couple of turns, crank the engine over till fuel starts spurting out, tighten up the pipes and try for a start, if it acts the same way loosen the injector pipes on the pump and take them off the injectors, crank the engine over while watching the injectors you are looking for blow back (protect the eyes/hands etc) if one is blowing back the needle is probably stuck open in the nozzle, you may as well have them all out and take them to the fuel injection shop.
