International 3500A timing

Working on a 1975 ish International 3500A backhoe with a 239 engine in it and I'm trying to get info on removing the injection pump. I have put the mark on the dampner at about 14* but cant be 100 percent sure as the pointer was badly bent and I got it close to straight. I found the mark in the pump cavity and have it on the line. My question is can I remove it now or do I need to rotate the engine until all the marks on the timing gears line up, I have put paint marks on the gears to be safe. If I do need to rotate the engine do you have any idea how many times will be required to get them all line up. Thanks in advance Mike

When you line up the marks in the pump the engine is now firing on #1 cylinder TDC,the timing pointer will be pointing at the mark on the pulley, you can remove the pump,do not turn the engine till the pump is back on again with it's marks in line,no need to worry about the other gears.

Yes, pump can be removed/replaced where you have it, but DO NOT loosen the three pump hub to gear bolts. Pump hub nut and washer are removed ONLY. I put a scribe line on
pump housing and timing case for reference, then back up engine to place the pump internal mark about 1/4 inch ABOVE the pointer tab, and remove/replace pump in this
position. Reason is pump cam plate is spring loaded and will jump back anyway when pump is off engine. Final timing can be checked later when pump is back on engine.

Thanks so much for the information on the timing marks it was very reassuring to know I was able to remove the pump without to much additional grief. I made a puller to push out the shaft and used the cover as a template but didnt realize the gear wasnt centered until I got back to the tractor 20 miles away. Improvised by putting a wrench between the puller and pump and then tightening, lol. Thanks again
