Hydrolic filter

I have a 1966 International 500 D dozer and need to know if the machine has a hydrolic filter.....There are two filters on the left side of the engine compartment one is a small filter about two inches in diametere and about six inches long th e filter is bolted on the engine block ..the second filter is along side of the smaller filter but looks like an engine oil filter about four inches in diametere...looked under the tractor at the hydrolic resevoir but there is no filter under the tractor. Dozer blade will lift....

the one next to the engine oil filter is the hyd only problem is part number is no good a case i h place just tried to get one there is also one under left foot if it has the hyd reverse

Looks like your machine could do with some new grouser bar welded on before the shoes start to bend,it is a lot easier while the shoes are flat,if you Google IH 500D hydraulic filter it will bring up posts about the filter on the Red Power site and what to do as apparently the filter is no longer available.

The shoes are the links of the tracks. The Grouser is the raised area at the front of the shoe. It wears down as the dozer is used. People weld square rod or flat bar to the shoes to rebuild the grouser when it wears off. Or replace the shoes, probably have to torch the bolts holding the shoes to the chain links.
 
The track shoe or pad is the part of the track that runs on the ground,the grouser is the part of the shoe that gives the track it's grip,the grouser wears down and can be built up again by welding on purpose made grouser bar that is available from undercarriage dealers,it needs a competent welder to do the job but it does save buying new shoes,when the shoes gets worn down too much the ends tend to bend this makes it harder to weld on the grouser bar because it will have to be bent to suit,by what I can see in the picture you posted yours is about right for doing in the near future depending how much you use it,if you have a neighbour that has a crawler get him to give a walk around,anyone that has a crawler will know what is what,there are certain things to look out for and like the old adage a stitch in time saves nine.

Now that I have located the hydrolic oil filter...I look at this filter and try to determine how to remove it from the machine as there is very
limited space to remove the filter if I pull the bolt that holds the filter bowl to the assembly...Looking at the filter assembly there are two bolts
that hold the assembly to the block, this seems to be the easy way to remove the filter assembly, but my question is does any one know what is behind
the two bolts, with my luck there will be a ball bearing and a spring that will pop out and dissapear leaving me worse off than when I started
 
now the engine oil filter is held on by two bolts to the block and that the way i changed my engine oil filter today. you can also change it from the bottom through a hole in the belly pan as the canister is held on with one bolt but its just lot easier and better to take the filter housing off . now on mine the hyd oil filter is connected to the suction line going to the hyd pump and it canister filter bolt is at the top..

Here is some history of the 500 series. I believe I also told you in one of your earlier posts about your machine, there was no "D" series. The D in yours stands for diesel engine (vs Gasoline) in a 500 crawler. Can you show documentation of a "D" series and the years built?

O K I can accept your answer about the D being diesel and you probably told me that is what the D stood for just did not remember I also wondered
why there was no A or B models....And again I really do appreciate the information that I receive............
 
You are correct and I am wrong the D in the 500 1966 models are to desinate the diesel engine...I am learning more on every post ...Thanks for answering my post..

i do have a pallet of used grouser that came off a td5 and two final drives complete and quite a lot other parts for the td 5 series and the 500 series dozes you can reach me at bbrown56 at hotmail.com it took two 500 and one td5 to get the one i have going so lot stuff left over though i have moved lot of it i run mine for 12hrs last day or so it did real good
