Insley L Dragline

Just purchased an old Insley model L dragline. 40’ boom, 3-71 Detroit
diesel (not original), 3/4 yard bucket, I was wondering if anyone on
here has any knowledge about them. I have a ton of questions,
anyone that I knew has passed away. Seems pretty easy to figure out
the basics/ work on. Unit is functional as is but needs some tlc. I plan
on getting it usable to dig a few ponds, then perhaps restoring it to
keep around the farm to maintain the ponds.

I don't know much about a L, but have owned a K model for about 30 years and am fairly knowledgable on it. If you think I can help you my email is [email protected]. Don't do a lot of dirt work with mine, used to build bridges on county roads and use it to drive piling.

This might get you started- https://www.ebay.com/itm/Insley-TYPE-L-PARTS-MANUAL-CATALOG-BOOK-CABLE-EXCAVATOR-CRANE-LIST-GUIDE-BINDER/372639293521?hash=item56c3086051:g:NI4AAOSwCQlZ7pE-

I would also look up the Historic Construction Equipment Association and ask for help there- https://www.hcea.net

Thanks for the replies. My first question is with the brake/clutch pads/linings. Some appear to be semi-metallic, some a very thick white cloth pad, and even a tow strap! The cut off ends were even still in the machine.lol Does it matter what kind of lining is used semi metallic or organic etc? I have relined tractor brakes before so doesn’t look too hard, just not sure what kind of material to buy.

Back in 1969, I worked with a sewer line installation crew. Had to go to a project where we used an old INSLEY to dig the tench for the sewer line. If I remember the bucket was fixed, did not curl like the newer hydraulic backhoe on the other site. As always my memory may be incorrect, after all that was 50 years ago. gobble

My dads company had an Insley, The company had few problems even though it would sit for 6 months at a time. Never allow the use of any clutch or brake with a tow strap lining. The heat of use will instantly turn it into a liquid bearing with zero holding power. This can happen in a fraction of a second at the friction surface. All clutch and brake bands/clutches should be rated material for that job. Stated on the packaging, or in the guarantee from the shop doing the relining. All crane rigging is rated for human safety related OSHA specification. I annually take crane/and OH crane certification. On a drag line, every time you intend to get into the cab, step along the tag line and assure yourself it has all pins and clevises in place and retained, and there is ZERO broken strands or kinks. That wire rope will kill you in 3 milliseconds if it breaks and enters the cab. Jim
