Case terratrac 310 photos and questions

I was wondering the extra hole in the cowl is for. There is a plate on the side of engine that must have held something.

Before I removed the cowl, there was a red oil filled bath air cleaner sitting on top of the cowl. it was connected by a metal tube that went through a hole and to the carburetor. it looked all original - so I don't think the unknown is an air cleaner.

do you have a photo of an hour meter mounted to the plate at the engine?

These dozers had 3 holes across the front there: the LH one is for the exhaust, the center one is for the engine cover breather, and the right one is for the air cleaner. That plate on the engine is what the air cleaner attaches to. I'm looking for one of these for my dozer, myself. They tend to get hit by trees and other stuff fairly easily, which is how mine was lost by the previous owner.

now it makes sense! the previous owner to mine must have modified it with the above cowl air cleaner/oil bath. it did seem a little weird to have it mounted on top of the cowl.

By the way, here's a pic of what your dozer looked like brand new.

Awesome Photo!! I drew a red cloud around an area i'm curious about. mine has a rod dangling from the rear ballast - it looks like its supposed to mount to the right side of seat? what is the purpose of that rod/bracket?

sorry you said cowl I was thinking you was calling the dash a cowl as that was what was in your pic if you has said hood I would have known,, hour meter was mounted in the dash,, maybe I misread your question,, I do not always get the descriptions people give,,

Those rods are just to support the counterweight. Everything on the top half of the dozer is sheet metal, so it has to mount towards the top of the frame. It's the two holes just behind and below the driveshaft tubes. Here's a photo of the counterweight and mounting frame. Also a photo of where my dozer has a log arch attached, using those two holes as it's "top" mount, and the drawbar for the bottom mounts. Your dozer will not have the drawbar, but instead have the mounting beams shown in the parts manual picture.

very interesting! if you were guessing, what year and model number would you say mine is?

With the non-eyebrow styling with the Case engine, it was built between '57-'59. That's about all the more I can say with certainty. It's either a 320 Utility or a 310C Utility, depending on the year. I'm guessing it's a 310C utility. Early on, they made a lot of changes, sometimes mid-year. Nobody can agree on year vs model # vs serial number at that time. Mine is listed in most databases as a '58 310 based on the serial#, but the plate says "G310C", for instance.

It's generally agreed that the crawlers were 310/320 (for Ag and Utility, respectively) in '57-'58, then numbered just 310C in '59. Some brochures say that they were 6V and others 12V systems. They introduced the eyebrow styling in mid-year '59, but still called it a 310C. It could be that they changed the Ag crawlers over to 310C early, but continued the 320 Utility crawlers longer. It could be that we have the dates wrong. The dash was one of the only things changed in those early years (with yours being a later one), but I'm not sure when that happened. The 320 book I have shows a different dash, which makes me think it's a 310C.

It looks like you have serial number plate on the side of the armrest (or at least where it used to be). If there isn't a serial number there, then it looks like you have the serial number plate on the loader. Any number may also help narrow down the year.
