Hitachi D4M

I’m looking for a small dozer to grade roads push out small piles, something I can move on my tandem flatbed truck or a big trailer behind my one ton.

I found an early 90s Hitachi D4M dozer. I know it’s a grey machine from Japan. The engine seems ok (not sure what engine it is - very little information online) Hydraulics are responsive 6 way blade. Mechanical transmission I guess 3 forward and 3 reverse (no shuttle). No leaks.
Undercarriage is getting on but that I’m pretty sure I can fine aftermarket replacements.

The concern I have is the steering clutches. The left side seems fine but the right is pretty hard to turn. I’ve gone on line and see I can get the replacement clutch parts. How big a job is it to do this and is there an adjustment for these or some kind of self adherent that eventually bottoms out ( where it is now).

Any other problems I should look out for? Or any good place to go online for information about them?
Thanks, Grant.

Sorry it’s a Hitachi D40M or maybe Dx40M

You guys came up in my search for the steering clutches already too. Somehow I thought you were in Australia, with the JimInOz handle. Idaho is a lot closer to BC.
Grant.

Hi Grant,

I am in Australia.
I dealt with steeringclutch.com many times for my business.

There were a few of those Hitachi dozers sold here. Many had Apex Swamp tracks fitted, having come out of rental fleets in Japan.

Grant look so more, got to be something out there better. The GEAR drive transmission is just not what you want, a good cheap dozer that is often overlooked it the little international TD 7 or TD 8 lots of them around for used parts and the back end is almost bullet proof and the ih d239 engine gives good service. Also the older case or JD are both better choices, now that is my 2 cents worth , I am 77 years old and been selling, buying, running dozers for over 40 years.

Thanks for the input Jim. I agree with you about the older case or JD may be better. We’ve been looking and looking but they are all plain wore out around here.

We don’t have any real big jobs for it, just pushing out a few piles, grading some pre spread gravel etc. I did want a hydraulic 6 way blade and wide enough tracks not to sink into the peat fields.

I’ll just rent a machine in when we need to spread a few acres of material 6-8” deep.

I’ll still keep my eyes open for something else though...can’t have too much iron right!
Grant
