Case 580 B boom seal replace

I have an older 580B Case backhoe that blew the seal on the boom cylinder (the one that raises and lowers the bucket)the other day. I can remove it but what I'm wondering, and I think I know how but I'm not sure, is how to remove the ram. I can see where there is a small set screw in the collar and I figure it needs to come out and the collar comes out with the use of a spanner wrench which I don't have one large enough. Can I use a pipe wrench as long as I only keep it on the narrow portion of the collar? Thanks in advance. Keith

Yes you remove the set screw,if I can I usually leave the cylinder in place where it is held solid to undo the gland nut and a pipe wrench can be used to undo it if you do not have a peg spanner which seldom works because the holes are damaged, protect the rod from the pipe wrench, undo the gland and pull the rod out,you will now need to take the piston off,I usually take the tilt link from the bucket and put the eye in there to hold it solid so the piston bolt can be undone, you will need a decent heavy duty socket and a long cheater bar to undo the bolt as it is loctited in,when you assemble again put a smidgen on the threads and tighten it up as tight as you can with the cheater bar you loosened it with.make sure none of the seals get twisted, pour some hyd oil over them before installing, keep everything clean including your hands,

Thanks AJ It's been several years since I worked on a 580 hydraulic cylinder and you just refreshed
