Hercules IXB engine rebuilding dilemma

Has anyone ever rebuilt a four cyl. Hercules? Got the block bored over .040 and I have all the bearings, new aluminum pistons and rings. and ready to start the rebuild. My problem right at the start is don't know which way to put the rods into the pistons. Top of rod is the kind with the split side and a bolt that clamps up around the wrist pin. My manual says put the bolt on the same side as the split in the aluminum piston, away from the camshaft. Another page says all the factory stamps on the rods and caps go on the cam side. That will put the bolt on the other side of the piston. Anybody know what way is correct? Ron

I have been rebuilding engines for close to 40 years and I won't even put a wrench to one if I don't have a manual for it. Those little details that you are talking about can cost you a bundle. Buy a manual.

Are you sure you don't have a manual that covers more than one engine? Post your question down on the Oliver board. There are several guys there that are very familiar with these engines. They were used in the Oliver Dozers.

I'm not claiming to be familiar with that engine as I only ever came across a few been in the UK but remembering back sixty years ago when serving my apprenticeship by the rule of thumb the rod side with the markings went to the camshaft side and the pistons always were either marked front or had an arrow head on them to be put pointing to the front, are the pistons different other than the size, the rods must have been on the old ones in the correct position can't you mount the new ones as the old ones were mounted,I am taking it you are using the same rods.

AJ, I was also taught that the factory stamps on the rods went to the cam side too. I rebuilt my first engine in 1965. My manual states "rods and caps are marked on the camshaft side". In another section it states "place the rod in the piston with the clamp screw hole to the slotted side of the (aluminum) piston" This puts the rod stamps on the wrong side. I think it may be a misprint in the manual. Thanks you.

Come on WM. I may be old but dementia has not completely taken over yet. Thanks for trying to help me, but I DO have a manual, it is specifically FOR the engine I have, and yes I know they were used in Oliver OC3 crawlers. That's why I posted on the crawler page. I will try the Oliver page as you suggest. Thanks

What I would be doing is putting the rods on the same as they came off,I think it is more important to have them right on the crank,if they are right there then the side the pinch bolt for the wrist pin is on will be right also,I see what you mean about the manual been confusing,it may be a misprint, good luck.
