How does one remove the starter on a John Deere 450 C. It looks like there is no way to reach the bolts holding it on to the engine, Any help appreciated.

They are removed with some degree of difficulty. For tools I've primarily used extensions to reach the length of the starter and sockets, sometimes flex sockets. Also at times I've bent wrenches, and used crowfoot adapters, depended on what was available at the time. Sometimes (not always) the transfer pump has to come off to gain some room to get the starter out or in. If still original it will have one 3/8" cap screw in the lower outside hole and a stud (3/8") with a lock washer and nut in the hole between the solenoid and the block. 9/16" sockets and wrenches should get the mounting hardware. Solenoid hardware varies but is comparatively easy to reach.

And you have to twist yourself into a few uncomfortable positions and just have at it.
