Case Davis Fleetline 30+4 Super Trencher Help

Hi All,

Last year I bought a Case Davis Fleetline 30+4 trencher that was not quite in as good of shape as the seller indicated (to put it kindly). I've made a lot of repairs/improvements and generally have it running pretty well (although it still burns through oil and leaks hydraulic fluid from just about everywhere), but I'm still not getting the trenching performance I think I should be able to get.

What I'm working on now is the range select control on the drive motor, as I'm thinking I'm stuck in high (travel) and switching to low (work) would probably give me better control. I'm hoping someone here knows a bit more about that and can tell me if the "in" position is work or travel. The label points left/right on a lever that flips up or down to engage/disengage. I was able to break the control lever and cable loose, but the actual switch on the hydraulic motor underneath will wobble back and forth but not actually shift. The Case parts list breaks down to the motor but not inside the motor so I have no way to tell how it works without breaking it open. There doesn't appear to be a service manual for this unit, and no one seems to have operating manuals either. I've found posts of people mentioning this problem, but no one mentioning a solution or any details on which state is which. I'm hoping someone here can help.

FYI, I know people are selling copies of the parts manual for the later version of this trencher on eBay, but that's available for free on Case's website. Here's the one for the version I have (apparently the Super Trencher):

<Removing all the links because I'm assuming that's preventing the post from going through. Will try again later or come up with another solution.>

Thanks,

I can't add the links at all, so the attached picture is a screen shot of them. You'd have to type them in, but for someone who's desperate to find some help, this will point them in the right direction. A search on the case parts website will bring it up along with a bunch of other stuff.

Well, for some reason the mechanism preventing links is apparently preventing the link to the image as well. PM me if you need the info, but hopefully the mods can fix this.

Welcome.

Can't help on your trencher, but YT requires a new user to have more than 5 posts on record before they can post pictures, unless you go down to site comments and ask permission to post pictures.

Ok, thanks. Figured it might be something like that. So one more reply to this and presumably the restriction will be lifted. I'll give that a shot as I think people would find the links useful. I know it took me a long time to track those down!

I have a 30+4 case trencher back hoe mine is 1 speed each direction and has a low speed knob that you turned for slow ground speed after flipping a lever up

Hi Bruce:

I believe what you're referring to is the following mechanism (assuming this uploads) that allows setting the creep speed.

What I'm referring to is this lever (which normally doesn't have wire holding it up, but I was hoping it might shift if I held it up and bounced the trencher back and forth a few times).

That cable pulls on this arm, which is the speed selection on the drive motor.

This is the label that doesn't really reflect the way the lever works.

And since it looks like images are going to work, here's the link to the schematic page on Case's website.

At any rate, the arm on the motor will rock back and forth a bit, but not shift into a different position or change the motor speed. The cable can't move enough to let the control lever flip to the "out" position. The most important question though is which position is the high/travel speed vs. the low/work speed. If "in" is the work position, then this is as good as I'm going to get, but if it's the travel speed then I need to get it to switch!

Thanks,

Beo

P.S. Here's the list of links I was trying to post originally:

and the one I'm seeing on eBay

Also, for the Wisconsin engine, here are the parts and repair manuals.

Hope that helps others. At any rate, I'm trying to get motor control arm 8 at the lower left of this print to move:

Yes yours is in a different location then mine and mine is running a cable to the directional stick
Bruce

Hi Bruce,

The direction stick is fly by wire as well, with two cables coming off of it. The left/right operates an SCV behind the front panel alongside the boom and chain controls. The forward/back goes to a control with a much longer handle on the pump up off the side of the engine. That controls the amount of fluid the pump sends to the hydraulic motor and its direction. I'm dealing with the THIRD cable, which goes to the hydraulic motor and changes its range of speed. It's all drawn out on the page link in the Case parts manual. What's not shown is which way is which as far as the motor speed selection.

Thanks,

Beo
