Rookie with a Crawler Loader

My Dad purchased an older CAT crawler loader at a state auction 25 years ago. He used it on their 32 acre farm and just for the fun of it. I had never had the chance to learn from him anything
about the crawler since I lived 800 miles away. The crawler now sits where he parked it 19 yrs ago before battling Alzheimers. I would like to learn everything I can about the "beast" as he use to
call it, but I cannot even identify the model. Can would greatly appreciate your help in identifying the CAT and what is the best way to start learning how to maintenance, care and run my Dad's
idea of fun. Thank you in advance for all your help and advise.

Your Cat looks to be a 977, a very powerful productive old machine. I don't have access to my serial number book tonight but unless someone else finds the year i can do it later. You would do well to find a manual for it which shouldn't be too hard. Hopefully water hasn't got into the engine in which case it is stuck. It will be very important to clean the fuel system before trying to run it. I hope you can get it running and continue the fun your Dad had with it!

20A means the series of 977 made from 1956 to 1960. The tag that starts out 8T means the engine originally was in a No. 12 grader 8T series. This engine is a model D318.
