JD450 clutch pedal

I am working on a 1970 JD450 dozer with the H-L-R transmission and trying to follow the books instructions to adjust the clutch. I assume the ?free play? should still have some springiness and the clutch should pull itself back to the cast stop when you take your foot off it. This pedal just flops forward until it contacts the clutch fingers. Looking at the diagrams, it looks like there is a big spring wrapped around the clutch shaft inside the bell housing that should pull the clutch back and I assume it must have failed. Is there anything else critical internally that the spring does other than pull the pedal back? If not I?m thinking I can just rig up an external spring to keep the clutch pedal pulled back against its stop. Any thoughts? I?m assuming you must remove the engine to fix that spring and I?d rather not do that if I don?t have to right now.

Thanks.

Yes the spring inside the clutch housing failed. Out of desperation I have installed an external spring but it seems to not work 100% right. You can get adjustments very close , but not right on.. You're correct in thinking that the engine AND clutch housing must be removed to replace that spring. Also , while in there, make sure the linkage on the clutch shaft is free where that long adjustment bolt is attached. I've seen those clutch pivots frozen with rust make the geometry of that linkage not work properly.

Thanks, I'll check that the linkage is free and will look at how to rig an external spring for now.
