1980 john deere 410

I have a john deere 410 that wont start. Is a flywheel turning tool available for this model? What should i troubleshoot first?

It helps to have all the info since people on a forum can't see it, even if something seems obvious to you.

Giving us the following info will help. Straight 410 or a 410 letter series? Tractor with loader, with backhoe? Gas or diesel? Was it running and quit or was it running, you worked on it, and now it won't start? If it happened after you worked on it exactly what did you do/work on? Or did you just get it and it has never started for you? Does it spin over freely when the starter is used? You are looking for a flywheel turning tool. Does that mean it won't turn over?

The service manual usually tells if there is a flywheel turning tool and which one is needed.

No flywheel turning tool I am aware of. Deere had them for Waterloo engines. 410 has a Dubuque 300 series engine. There is a timing pin and cover. You can take off the cover and use a big screwdriver to turn the engine over (if my memory is correct).

The fire was just around the right wheel all it burned is the throttle cable and emergency brake. I rewired the starter button and put a new starter on it with no luck. I just got the wheel broke loose. Could the clutch or wet clutch be froze up?

It could be any number of things but really checking and reporting results one thing at a time often yields better results than "shotgunning" for ideas.

You said you rewired the starter button and put a new starter on it. What does "no luck" mean? Nothing energized so nothing happened; or did everything energize, the starter engaged but didn't turn the engine at all? If that is the case you need to try turning it by hand. If nothing energized you need to start by checking to see if it got power to the starter when you pushed the button.

Was it running when it caught fire? Is the oil still in the transmission? Did it burn hydraulic hoses off? How is the hydraulic oil level?

When looking for most parts in the parts catalog you will need the serial number for the tractor, not the engine. That is the number used to identify and date your machine. That tag should be in one of two places (they moved it somewhere along the way). The first place they were located was on the right side of the transmission, towards the rear of the foot rest and above the transmission dipstick. The next location it might be is on right side of the front support, above the front axle.

There is an engine turning tool for that model. It consists of a steel block with two holes thru it. One hole is for the 3/8" bolt to fasten it to the flywheel housing.The larger hole is for a dowel, one end is a hex for the wrench, the other end is cut to mesh with the flywheel. As always recommended, buy the manuals for that model. The manual probably has a photo, and the tool number. My manuals are 50 miles from here, not planning to go there soon.
