A friend has a 1995 Cat D8 with a 3406. Engine is losing coolant, but not showing in crankcase. Any engine weakness or diagnostic to be performed before pulling the head? Any hints for Dutch Uncle advice is greatly appreciated.

how about re torquing the head down?? have you noticed any weeping outside the head or bubbles in the radiator?

if it has a air to water after cooler it could be losing water to the intake side if it is a slow loss it may not show in the exhaust as white smoke

Did you do an oil sample ? I had a truck engine that was doing that same thing the oil wasn?t milky but I was losing coolant . Pulled an oil sample and there it was

9N?,check the torque/tranny fluid is not rising, could be the rad pressure regulator valve is leaking out the over flow tube into the belly pan, does it leak much say in the course of a day,is the hood clean,ie she's not putting water out the exhaust.

That's a lot,if the oil levels are not rising its unlikely the coolant is leaking in to the engine or tranny,is it showing any signs of overheating, losing that much coolant daily you would expect to have a wet patch somewhere, does the machine have heat if so that's another possible, right pain those secret leaks.
Good luck

Not overheating. Open station, no aux heat. Run for several days that way. Will post back what we find.
