John Deere 410b

I just picked a 410 b and was having some trouble with the gear shift lever. i believe it was because I was missing the small plate on the floor that kind of guides it. So I pulled the larger floor pan off to try and measure the plate that was missing so I could make something to replace it.
When I pulled the floor pan up the gear shift lever came out of the transmission. I believe the snap ring that belongs there is missing. I put the lever back into the transmission and now the tractor won't shift and is stuck in neutral. I'm unsure how to try and fix it and any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. [/list]

It sounds like it was in neutral when you pulled the lever out and you missed the slot in the rails when you put it back. When in neutral the rails form a slot the end of the lever operates in so it can move sideways to select a rail to move forward or rearward.

Remove the lever, using a light look down into the shift tower. You should see a slot formed by the shift rails (red square in the photo, not your trans, but you should see a similar slot in your 2 rails). To properly move the rails the end of the lever needs to be in the center of the slot when you install it.

As for missing parts here is shift lever page from the 410B parts catalog so you can compare what you have. You need to get the missing parts and secure the lever in place or you may have more issues.
