Fuel Gauge Sender

I'm looking for a fuel gauge and tank sender for my 555 Ford backhoe, my instrument cluster gauges do not work so i put manual mechanical gauges on it (a lot less $$$) so i would need the mechanical fuel gauge and tank sender match up and read right. The fuel tank is 24 gallon, if anyone knows of something that might work please let me know, i've searched the web but a lot of what i found might or might not work.

My definition of a mechanical gauge is that the gauge and sender are one piece -mechanically connected- and the gauge would be mounted directly on the tank over the hole the sender (float) goes into the tank through, like a Farmall fuel gauge cap or an Allis Chalmers D series tank gauge. It sounds like you are actually looking for a individual electric fuel gauge, so you can see it along with the other gauges in your dash, with a matching sending unit. Have you searched the Ford parts books for models prior to yours that might have used an electric gauge and sender that was not part of a cluster panel? Vendors like Summit and some marine suppliers have adjustable senders with matching gauges.

Have you checked your sender with an ohmmeter to see if it works and what the ohm range is? You might be able to find a gauge that uses the same range.

Like Jim said then take the hot wire to your gage and touch it to ground it should make the needle go from one side to the other full travel. If it does that the gage is good. If the needle on the ohm meter moves as you swing the arm on the sender it is good. Should swing both directions as the arm is moved both directions.
I have bought generic senders for tractors and had them work fine. If they will not quite make the full travel to read both full and empty. I set them so they read accurately on the empty side. I have never run out of fuel with a gage that didn't quite go to the top and have plenty of times with one that was not accurate at the bottom.
