How do I clean hydraulic system. ?jd 450

This is a update to my last post ! I got the main filter out , but when I took out the micro filter that is supposed to be cleanable only about 1/3 of the filter paper material was left ! This has prob been deteriating for some time , as the prev owner never did maintenance!
So now , do I flush the whole system or clean tank replace filters and refill res ? Can I flush the system with air by blowing ea line back? How do I clean main control ?
Any and all help would be appreciated

Mike

Clean the tank out , wipe it as best as possible. As far as filter media getting into the valves and other parts, it's already been there. The flow of oil rinsed the valve out unless some got into the main relief or circuit reliefs. That filter is a return oil filter so it is supposed to collect junk before it goes to reservoir. The pump has already ingested any filter media that got thru the inlet lines. I don't think I would be too alarmed about it unless you have a specific problem lets say with the pump leaking externally. Install the new filter, fill with clean hydraulic oil and run it.

If I am reading the parts catalog correctly, the cleanable filter used on [u:63c21cf6f0]early[/u:63c21cf6f0] units was wire mesh, as most cleanable elements are. They changed to the replaceable "Micronic" paper element in "later" units. If you had/have a paper element I would say yours falls in the "later" group and it is to be replaced, not cleaned. I would agree it definitely not serviced as specified if part of it was missing.

If the controls and functions seem to be working alright, I expect the missing part of the paper element has disintegrated and is in small particles spread through the system and has been for who knows how long. I would clean anything I could see for visible contamination from the reservoir tank, install a new filter element, refill the reservoir, and run it. I would plan on doing a couple filter changes at shorter intervals than called for in the operator's manual. That should collect anything that may be moving free through the system. If a valve hangs up at some point, then deal with that issue (which may never occur). You might end up putting contamination into things while breaking hoses and blowing them out. Just my thoughts, others may vary.

Thanks for the reply Roy and Jim
The reason I got digging into it was that the hydraulics all but quit working , everything but a very slow left and right on the blade .
When I tried to lift out filter it was jammed as it had come loose and dropped about 3/4 " finally got it out yesterday. That s when I discovered the lower one was all but gone .
Now my fear is the oil had free flow with now filtering at all .
So I will get a new lower filter and clean tank and try it .

Thanks
Mike

Roy and Jim i have replced both filters in hyd tank and cleaned and rinsed it and dryed it out after rinsing, filled with new oil.
The only blade functions i have is left and right and thats slow it seems.
When you ask it to raise you can feel it like it is trying sort of a small grunt , but no blade movement.
With left and right working im assuming the pump is working ,
how do i go about cleaning the valves or should i remove hoses 1 by 1 and clean them out first ?
Thank You

Mike

First make sure the pump shaft or drive line components between the pump and engine have not stripped and are slipping. If stripped you may want to start by pulling the pump and checking it.

Are the valve spools moving full stroke or do they seem to be hanging and not moving?

If they are moving it looks like checking the suction line from tank to the pump, the pump, the pressure line to the control valve and the control valve and its components is the starting point. You could start at the valve and go back to the tank. When a function (lift, angle, tilt) is not in use the oil returns to the tank from the valve.

If the spools are not moving fully I would start with the valve and look for foreign material in there lodged in the spools and main relief. I would still work back to the tank if material was found in the valve.

Your not knowing the history behind the missing part of the filter; material could be anywhere, or it might be something all together different causing this if the previous owner tore/cleaned that material out of it.

Roy may have other thoughts.

Jim the previous owner did nothing to it as im finding out,
I found pieces of the filter paper in the tank . I will start to clean out hose lines by disconnecting both ends and rinse and blow them out and check pump . then work at the control end while the lines are off .

Thanks Jim
