450C crawler

Recently located a 450C crawler. Owner says the engine has been replaced but when hot the TORQUE CONVERTER slips. Correct me if I am wrong but I was under the impression that a 450c does not have a torque converter and as such this would not be the issue. ANYONE have any ideas on what the real problem would be? Pretty sure if it were the clutch it would be slipping all of the time and not just when hot.

First question with a 450C is; Is it really a C series? Confirm the serial number. It should start "450 C". You are correct a 450C does not have a torque converter. I believe 450Gs were the first with torque converters.

A 450C has a clutch between the engine and the hydraulic HLR transmission. Is the slippage the same in both direction or more in forward or in reverse? Seals in the HLR clutches could leak more when hot, which would lower clutch pressure and allow slipping. Low system pressure could show more when hot. I have seen engine clutches that slipped more as they warmed, but usually you smell those when they are slipping much.

Steering clutches can slip but not as likely to have both slipping at the same time. Also a 450C has wet steering clutches and are less likely to give trouble than dry clutches.

I would recommend he start by making all the clutch (engine and HLR) adjustments, and in the order given, in the technical manual. Then do all the pressure checks on the HLR the manual calls for. If he doesn't have John Deere technical manual # TM1102, I recommend he get one to help diagnose the cause.

(quoted from post at 04:05:52 11/19/19) My question would be a 450C WHAT? to be sure I was on the right page.

Good point, shinnery. I was thinking JD because he said he didn't think a 450C had a torque converter. Case 450C used a torque converter.

So, John Deere or Case, or something else? If JD use the serial number to confirm it is a true 450C.

You can diagnose the problem but I think you will need to do at least some, if not all, the things I mentioned to do that. Likewise with any other brand there will be tests to be made to do a true diagnosis. The exception might be if the drive shaft between the TC and transmission stops turning when hot, I would focus on the TC.

(quoted from post at 07:47:50 11/19/19) Sorry for the confusion. Yes it is a
Deere.

Ok, I think my original post gives you the idea of what you, or the owner, needs to do to correctly diagnose the problem using the technical manual. Otherwise it is just a guess of engine clutch, HLR, or both; but definitely not a torque converter problem. JMHO

Go to archives about 450 hlr pressure testing. A pressure test will tell you to walk away or run away from that machine.

For the cost of an AT 19044 spin on oil filter you can check for major damage to the transmission.. This filter is behind the front grill.. unscrew it and spin on a new one.. Cut the old filter shell and check the pleats in the paper element to look for metallic particles..
