Caterpillar 22 Clutch Adjustment

Hi all,

I couldn't seem to get registered over on the ACMOC site, so thought I would give this one a try. I'm new to the Cat world, came home with a little 22 last week. It runs great, steers great, and pulls pretty well for the most part. Had it out with my pull type subsoiler yesterday and when I'd hit a really tough spot the clutch would want to slip. Need to investigate pedal adjustment a little more, but I think it is okay. Took inspection plate off and everything looks clean and dry. Do any of you guys know, is there any adjustment on the clutch itself? I see there is a nut on each spring on the pressure plate, are these a predetermined setting or can a guy gain anything by tightening them a flat or two? Thanks!

I know enough to be dangerous about this era, smaller Caterpillar tractors. Sounds like you have one in decent shape, steering clutches working is a plus, meaning it has not sat a long while.

There is likely an adjusting collar of sorts, you should get a distinct snap over effect with the clutch lever on these dry clutch types. The Twenty-Two preceded the letter series tractors, R2 & D2 series. They might have similarities in the clutch components.

Best thing you can do is get the Serviceman's Reference Book, Operator Instruction and Parts Catalog for the tractor.

Surprised you had trouble over on ACMOC, great site for these. This would be an easy question to answer, and it should be adjustable.

Not familiar with the 22 and pedal clutch--I had an R2 and there was a pin adjustable collar for the hand clutch---I would not adjust any of the springs on the disc until you are sure on what to adjust

There you go, pedal clutch, disregard the lever mentioned above, I think I have an R2 military technical manual in my collection of books, might shed some light on this, but the Twenty-Two being a common tractor in both gauges, the books mentioned above should be available, even if Cat reprint.
