Hello everyone, I seem to have caused myself a problem by not using the correct tool. I have a broken Advance screw and need some ideas on how to remove. Any constructive comments appreciated. Thank you!!!

The correct tool is a "Bristol" bit or a slightly modified Torx bit, and along with that, Stanadyne supplied a hardened steel sleeve that threaded into the threaded port and snuggly surrounded the ball stud to prevent it from expanding and breaking like yours did.

At this point, I don't know if installing that tool would allow to correct bit to grab what's left of the ballstud and unscrew it.

Thanks Bob ! I did get it removed but I would like to install the new screw correctly. Where can I buy the Bristol bit and hardened steel sleeve.

I got mine quite few years back from an authorized Stanadyne pump shop.

Some are willing to sell such things to the public, some are not.

Another poster on here as mentioned he's gotten parts and tools from https://usdieselparts.com.

Wouldn't hurt to call 'em and ask.

how did you get it out?
I have some old pumps that need retainers and unstuck plungers from setting
have the tools but this scares me still needing to shock them first
practiced on the parts bin and the head screws break (to look at them)their removal method also?
thanks

I had a ball stud break like that.

To prevent that happening on the next one I used a piece of round bar that fit snugly inside the advance bore and slightly longer . I drilled a hole trough the shaft the size of the ball stud and cut the shaft trough the centre of the hole and then drilled the cross hole lengthwise in both shaft halve out a bitsa bit so once the shaft halves are installed in the bore it'll cup the ball. I then put the pump in the vice with the shaft halves held fairly snug between the jaws and I used a Torx bit ground slightly down to fit the stud to break the stud loose(I use this setup also to torque the stud down when installing.
I have not broke a stud again on the other 3 pumps I have rebuild since, and some where pretty tight.

I have been unable to find a Bristol bit unless I buy the whole kit and they ain't cheap.
