Track alignment issues HD-4

Hi all,

I finally have put to use my aging Allis-Chalmers HD-4 crawler with loader bucket. It works great except that ocassionally the right track seems to get a little lost and will not track the bottom rollers as it should. At that point it goes "pop, pop, crackle" and makes really bad noises. I ususally back it up slowly then and the track finds its way home again. It always happens after making some agressive turning involving the use of the steering brake on that side. Not sure why as the right side is the "good" side. I rebuilt the idler wheel axle and bushings and all the bottom rollers are good on that side. Left side is far worse for idler wear but the track always runs true on the left side with no issues.

What do you suppose is going on?

hi you mite want to check and see if the track frame and rails are straight and bolted up tight, also make sure your tracks are adjusted correctly and dont turn with track sag on the bottom. by turning with track sag on bottom you have to be careful if your tracks are worn etc.also does the machine have rock guards? they can help keep dirt , trash etc... out of the chain travel which can cause problems hope this helps

With the tracks adjust up run the machine forward on level ground, stop and get off, stand behind the sprocket on each side and have a good look at the alignment of the track from sprocket to idler, see the tracks have the same gap between the inside of the pads and the machine on each side, see the idler is standing vertical and not leaning in or out,if the tracks are in alignment are the rails worn, are the chains snaking,if the rails and pin and bushings are worn keep them a bit tighter and get as much out of them that you can.
