Gehl 4400 Engine

Just bought a Gehl 4400 skid steer. Runs out nice, not too badly abused, Ford Engine. HOWEVER, which Ford engine? From what I can gather, it is a Ford 134ci/2.2L Industrial Ford. Even with that
information, I can't find a whole lot on the engine. Is there a cross-referenced car/truck/tractor that this came in? Looks like the same engine as a Ford 641....or similar. It has an updraft carb and two studs
in the middle of the valve cover to hold it down. Any way to nail down what this is and how to source parts is greatly appreciated.

How does one determine that? Furthermore, if you wanted to know all of the nomenclature, timing, bore, tune-up specs, etc?

I don't know if I'm right or wrong either about the 172 been fitted,it was in the one I was at but that means nothing the way things are changed about to keep going,a good look around might turn up a tag with the info on it,for the bore and stroke you will be needing the manual, the most common engine was the 3 cyl Perkins diesel.

This was what I found in a manual preview.

Bought a 4400 service manual, nothing in it regarding the engine other than the size. Ford 134 gas, that's it. No capacities, type of oil, timing, weight, compression, firing order, nothing. Never seen that before. I have had many tractors over the years that had multiple engine options and always had specs on the engine even if it came from a different manufacturer. I had an Oliver 1650, Waukesha engine, manual had both gas and diesel in the book.

There is a 134 and 172 industrial engine manual on the _ tractor club website. Try a web search for "ford 134 industrial engine manual" and it should come up for you. It is a pdf that can be saved to your computer. It may not be the exact one for your engine but it should help. There are several sites with the engine manual for sale, and apparently different printings as well.

Just curious where did you get the manual you have and who was the publisher. The original manual may have had a separate manual for the engine included with it in a package, I've seen that done for some machines with optional engines.
