Case 450 dozer sticking brakes

I have a 1970 Case 450 dozer that I bought a year ago from my wife s grandpa. It s a well running machine. The only thing wrong with it was worn blade bushings and the brake pedals were locked up. I have been operating the machine just fine without brakes and I don t really have an interest in fixing them to a useable state. It would require master cylinders, slave cylinders, cables, and too many other parts. But I recently ran into the issue of the brakes sticking in reverse. I sat for about two, maybe three months of no use. Going forward, I have no restriction. Turning is ok. Reverse, however, there is definitely something dragging and it smells like hot brake pads. My question is what would be causing this and how do I fix it? I m not afraid to take stuff apart. After all, I am a mechanic at a power plant. I just like to have a little bit of knowledge before I start.

i have three 450s and that is a new one on me only thing it might be is a band came lose and is binding when you back up sliding in side the band making it tight is it one side or both ?as for the hyd. brakes for get about fixing them first you don't need them and 2nd the price for parts will kill you if you can find them .the last one i did fix years a go the master cyl.s were a bear to find and that was 20+ years ago

That was exactly my thoughts on fixing the brakes as well. I feel comfortable and the machine steers just fine without them. I guess I ll have to take the covers off and see what s holding it up. I can t tell if it s one side or the other. When in reverse, it still goes straight and doesn t track one way or the other so it s hard telling. From speaking with my wife s grandpa, the brakes haven t worked in over 20 years so I don t know what has all of a sudden changed.
