Have a Bobcat331 excavator with blown motor in swamp is there a simple way to disengage tracks or will it be ok to just drag it ??
 
If it has planetaries in the hub of track drive, take off the hub cover and remove the sun or center gear or others as necessary. Put cover back on. It should now freewheel. Watch out for freewheeling down hill.
 
The drive motors have internal brakes, that are kept applied by a heavy belville/spring washer, so the motor isn't likely to turn as long as you aren't dragging it for a long distance, over hard ground. In other words you'll typically chance damage the tracks more than you would the motor.


That said, I know there are all kinds of horror stories, but I've been working on equipment for over 30 years and have yet to see anybody tear anything up....as long as they used a little common sense. In other words, drag it out of the mud. From there, as long as you can get it to slide without the tracks turning the drive motor very much, you should be OK.

If they did happen to try turning, it's not hard to block them with a piece of hardwood, etc, and lock them down that way.
 
NCW, I have seen a LGT that was towed about two city blocks that destroyed the motor. Without pressure the pistons come off the slipper plate and towing overspeeds the block holding the pistons and slippers, they destroy themselves.

I have a motor from a 317 LGT which fell off a trailer and hit the road spinning the motor. The same scenario as above, destroyed the pistons and slippers.
 
I don't doubt damage can happen....If we all started telling stories of the stupid things we've seen done, and the damage done, I doubt the thread would ever end.....LOL.......

As I said though, using some common sense (like blocking the tracks if the drive motor started turning) tends to limit the chances of damaging anything.
