Transmission question.
Operating 1st and reverse work as normal (Well with 50+ years of wear). I do have a whining noise when using these gears.
2nd and 3rd seem very tight as I guess they get used rarely. I have noticed that if I use 2nd/3rd, going back to 1st/reverse it is very hard to select. It seems the rail is out of alignment after I move? I had to remove the shifter once to get it to go back in gear. I think there is a spring and ball there to keep in in line? Maybe that has stuck or broke?

This whine is recent arrival? the usual thing to whine is the ring-gear and as you said with the 50 year ware in it can be caused by worn bearing/s,bearings worn a little could also but a little weight on the gears that you have trouble shifting,ie things are not aligning up exactly to go into mesh, you may have to drain the oil and take the side cover off and have a look at the selectors and see if there is any play in the shafts.

The whine is not new. The previous owner said it has done it for a while.
The shift boot was not good so water got in. I changed the fluid (90 Mineral oil) but who know what damage has been done.

I think we will use it as is until it gets worse or we have downtime to check it out.
Thanks!
