I am getting ready to put the cast oil pan back on my tractor with just gasket sealer. So the one the dealer has he wants to soak me for is $60. For another $40 I can get a new instrument package . It's a thin paper gasket ...I have put alot of parts on tractors with just sealer and can't remember when I had a leak .I even put it on all my water pump hoses because its rough cast and it also helps slide them on if there tight. I all ways take time to make sure everything is very , very clean..w Any thoughts on that.?

I've always been a bit concerned about the amount of gasket maker "sealer" that squeezes out on the inside of pans, valve covers, side panels etc. that could get into the lubrication system. The possibility, though small, exists, and having some sealer migrate to a main crank journal or the tube leading to the valve train or the return line from the filter concerns me. So I generally bite the bullet and make a gasket or buy one and use Indian head or Permatex aviation gasket sealer. just my opinion. gobble

TT you are correct about the ooze out, back in the eighties Deutz engines used a liquid gasket on the oil pans of their 6 cylinder engines fitted to the Poclain 90CK a very popular excavator here in the UK,a customer we done repairs for engaged us to change a seized engine in one of his machines,we fitted a replacement unit and due to the reputation of Deutz engines we took the oil pan from the failed one to see what was the cause, the oil pick up strainer was completely blocked with the oozed out silicone and as a result the bearings picked up and seized due to no oil, clearly there was too much used, having said that I have used it hundreds of times on other things like transmissions and diffs,so used properly no problem, but around the lubrication are of the engine no.

Obviously if used in excess RTV could cause some problems.

A number of smaller GM 4 cyl engines are assembled with no gaskets only RTV Engine Sealant (Genuine GM Fluid 88864346) (GM Fluid 12378521 RTV Engine Sealant - 5.3 oz. Cartridge) in area where the lower case splits and for sealing the oil pan.

Most do not know that silicone is made from,,,,, DIRT/Sand,, 99% of the time it is not used correctly yes most all fail to read directions,, that said I do use red or copper colored silicone on Only certain things,, what i do use is gasket eliminator made by Loc-Tite,, I use the CNH stuff, it does not do what is posted below that silicone does,, its very easy to remove if needed, and seals without any gasket or with them,, it is also called "Flange Sealant" once the air is removed from it it make a oil tight plastic gasket, Perfect for cast to cast or cast to steel applications I have used it now for over 30 years, any CIH/CNH or Case CE dealer stocks it,, but I am sure it can be bought at parts stores also
