What is the horsepower of a Caterpillar D7 3T such as the army used in the late 1940s. Not finding it anywhere on the Internet. Thanks

Thanks very much. I am researching a story on the army crawlers coming through western Nebraska during the blizzards of 1949 to dig out ranchers. I think these were the crawlers the army used during that period.

Military Technical manual states 70-90 DBHP for a 7M & 4T, which was a government purchase order, some 3T's were used as well, but not all went to the war effort. They built 3T's until 1955. Last couple of years they came with an oil bath clutch, very reliable tractors.

3T was the civilian model, 4T was the military model. So if the military was using D7's to move snow, they
were using 4T models. Actually no difference except the 3 or the 4. Probably had a cable blade where the
cable went overhead, and used a LeTourneau winch, or if the cable went alongside the tractor in a pipe,
they used a Caterpillar winch. The blades could be either Caterpillar or American Car and Locomotive.

Slight difference, 4T's did have higher gear ratios in the transmission, ground speed was faster.

LeTourneau called their cable control a Power Control Unit, (PCU)Caterpillar did not start making these cable controls and blades until after the war, they called theirs Cable Control Units, (CCU) American Car & Foundry in Berwick PA made the dozer kit blades, and I am unsure as to whether they built the tractors as well under license to Caterpillar, I have one their blades,. LeTourneau made knock down dozer kits AC&F made ones that were not knock down.
