I have a grey market CAT 312b excavator that has all the decals and signage in english language. I am unable to find a manual for it based on the serial number on the machine, either at the dealer or by posting the number on the internet.
6LK00713
7DK00607

Any ideas?

Thanks

I tried both of the numbers in the Cat dealers data base and they cannot be found, how come you got two numbers, are you sure they are the serial numbers,a grey import to us here in the UK means say a Cat made in the US for the Japanese market ends up here in the UK then its a grey import and the serial number might not be found on Cats database here, the only difference in a machine might be the decals, have you any idea what market the machine was meant for,you might have to settle for the books of a local 312B.

One of those numbers is the engine number and the other is the serial number. The serial plate says Cat Mitshubishi made in Japan

The engine serial # checks out good, seems to be the same in all 312B's,but the machine # say's cannot be found,I think the local 312B books will be the same with all the major components, been made in Japan it could have been intended for anywhere I could not find where that serial # was intended for, sorry I cannot be more help.

My Cat buyer info guide by Toughquip shows that that is a straight 312, a 92 model. According to this guide 7DK started in 92 and went to 96. After that they were a 312B with several VIN prefixes.

sellers often put later model decals on machines to fool you into paying more for a more recent model.

I have a friend who has one same machine, he was able to get manual, but it was written in Japanese, so more or less worthless, his had the Mitsubishi engine , the local cat dealer which was big one had no way of looking up machine,, I think you are sorta out luck on a manual

I was in the market for something like a 312 in 2006. I tried one at the dealers site and it seemed like a nice machine. I remember the VIN starting with 7DK. I ended up buying a Hitachi EX120-1 mainly because it had a progressive link thumb. It also came from Japan but I got a manual from John Deere. Only one time did I have trouble with getting a part, but the parts lady at Nortrax found something for me. That EX120-1 is the same as a JD 490D except for the engine. Hitachi makes JD excavators. Now I'm glad I didn't get that 312.

I am with DFW you have a straight 312, not a B model machine. Not that it makes a lot of difference in operation only when you go to sell it. One thing they were prone to do is leak a little oil on the radiator oil cooler then run hot. Be sure you clean the radiator area very good.
