HD7 crawler engine parts

I recently aquired a AC HD7 crawler with the 3-71 Detroit diesel. The engine needs a rebuild. Does anyone have recommendations as to where to purchase a complete quality engine overhaul kit? Thank you.

Before you buy a kit, disassemble the engine and take it to a machine shop. The bores in the block can get out of round,or barrel shaped and will require the block to be bored and oversize liners installed. Not all of them, but usually shows up on high hour engines that have been "rebuilt" a time or three. Have them check the line bore of the mains also. Wouldn't hurt to reseal the blower, replace the water pump, and a rebuilt fuel pump and get the head done, and go back with the higher compression pistons and upgraded injectors. This will assure easy cold starting, less blow by and prolonged engine life.

MSM, thank you for the excellent information. This is exactly the kind of response I was hoping for. I welcome any other insight as well.

I've been buying my engine parts from Endurance Parts in Lincoln Nebraska for quite a few years now.Detroit parts I generally bought OEM,but I did buy quite a lot of Korody-Colyer parts for them too. Some said the K-C parts were fine, but the guys that sold OEM parts said they didn't last quite as long.I did a 4-71 in a Link-Belt excavator in the mid 80's using K-C parts. He put 11,000 hours on it before he sold it.I have no idea how many hours are on it now,but it is still going strong ditching and clearing land for the man that bought it.

If this is a part time around the acreage/farm type of use machine you may want to decide how much you want to spend on your overhaul? It's sound advice to go the machine shop route but it will become expensive no doubt. Having owned and operated Detroit engines in trucks and other equipment for between 30 to 40 years my conclusion is that you can afford some risks to save on expense, especially if you do the labour yourself. Overhauls were done in my own shop on all but one, some partial engine work was farmed out but were costly. If the engine is tired but has good oil pressure and no internal coolant leaks whatsoever chances are high that if you do new liner kits with new bearing shells you will have excellent results. A machine shop will generally insist on perfection... after all that's what their business is about but for old iron your budget has a run-away. Last time I was buying an overhaul kit they offered me Chinese made parts but I declined in favor of American made goods. I had excellent results and many trouble free years of performance.
