oil additives

I have an allis h4 that has couple of weeping rams. just wondered if some one uses an additive in there hyd oil to help the seal. thanks

Blue devil makes a hydraulic additive that might work. I've used it to stop some minor ram seepage. It wasn't an instant fix but within a few hours of operating the machine after adding it the seepage stoped.

My old buddy that ran AC dozers back in the day told me " I would buy STP in 5 gallon buckets and add STP to every oil sump on the dozer. That way of I got barbed wire wrapped around a final drive I could finish out the day". I don't know where to find it in 5 gallon buckets.

It would be cheaper to buy a new cylinder than to buy 5 gallons of STP stop leak,at $6 for 428 ml from NAPA and the cylinder would still leak,I in the repair business and there is no such thing as liquid repair, that stop leal works by a chemical reaction softening and swelling the seal material and is most suitable for shaft seals like a transmission or front pulley,it's only temporary get you home measure, the only chance of stopping a cylinder leaking at the gland is to first see what type gland it has,if it has a two piece gland the rod seals may be split and can be replaced by removing the outward cap, prise out the old seals and fit the new,if the seals are not split adding a shim between the outward cap and the seal will increase the pinch on the seal and stop the leak for a considerable length of time,I use piece of plastic carefully cut to the size of the rod and the seal housing bore, split it to get it over the rod and put the cap on,about 1/16" usually does.

I think I would reseal the leaks rather that go buying buckets of stop leak, those additives are more for auto transmissions and the like than hydraulic cylinders, when an expensive hydraulic pump has to be considered you would buy a lot of seal kits for the price, putting the shim in like Aj said will increase the pinch on the seal and stop it leaking,in fact all the old cat cylinders had shims that could be added or removed to do the same thing and it worked well.
