Hello Everybody, and thanks in advance for your advice.

A total newbie to tractors here. I am in search of a project backhoe. I ran across a 1960's Case 530CK that was caught in a grass fire. All of the tires burned and the area from behind the steering wheel to the backhoe controls appears to have received most of the heat. Some of the backhoe cylinders are a little blued from the heat and the backhoe control valve body got pretty hot. The machine has a 188ci diesel engine that appears okay. The oil is a little gunky and the engine will turn over, but obviously won't start. The fuel injector body got hot and the exterior portions of its seal/gaskets have melted a little from heat, but don't see any other exterior issues with the engine. The gearshift (a single shaft with one knob - please tell me what type of tranny this is?) is rusted in place and will not move at all. Obviously, all of the cylinders and valve bodies will require rebuilding, along with new hoses, etc. In addition to tires, this will likely require wheels, too. I figure that before it is all done I will replace every valve, gasket and seal on the thing - IF I take it on. Not knowing what kind of tranny this is, I really don't know what to expect inside, and the hottest part of the fire appears to be between the gearshift and the backhoe control area. Maybe somebody can tell me what to expect from a tranny box that got hot?

I can get it for about $500, delivered. I'm not at all afraid of a challenging project, but not interested in a lost cause. Run or take a chance at it? Parts available for this thing?

They came with both a mechanical and power shuttle coupled to a four speed transmission with a high and low range,I would buy it and take it to the scrapper, buy a machine that's a runner unless you have a kidney and liver to sell,my two cents worth.

Hi I've rebuilt a couple tractors that had minor fires, and still had tires on. You will find stuff you didn't expect while fixing it or for the first month or 2 using it. you have to watch for oil burning back inside hydraulic parts, and fuel will do the same. Anything that has springs and polished parts in like valve blocks will probably be rusty or the springs are messed up internally if fluids burned back. anything aluminium thats burned or melted got incredibly hot to.

I'd say it's a $3000 backhoe running and driving when I've seen them around. yes there are always the guys wanting 4000 to much online in classifieds or ebay so don't price it there as being a cheap machine when you finished you are going to put 1000's in it plus your time, and still have a 60's machine.

I was offered a 580 b with extender and cab for 3000 here in Canada that needed a head gasket but looked real sharp with original paint. I declined that because when the transmission fell out later it wasn't worth the hassle after fixing the motor. I brought another brand machine running for 5500 put another 2500 in it and l have a good machine now.

A guy I know well picked up a MF 50A for 3000 with a rebuilt motor that had sat. by the time he got some replacement cylinders built as his had rusty pitted bores and replaced hoses and changed oils and filters, he had another $3000 in that, and still had some smaller stuff to do like electrics. The pattern is old cheap backhoes are always a great idea until you start using them and fixing them. blow a line and put 10 gallon of oil on the ground thats expensive and the hose might be $100 or more on top depending what it is.
Seriously it not being your problem would be the best decision you made recently, if you want to blow $500 you'll regret later just send the cash to me L.O.L.

Regards Robert
