MY HD4 DILEMMA

Removed my sprocket axle from the left side of my allis hd4 due to a bad seal. THe case looks good. I will replace the bearings and seal. I have never seen an axle before but there is some groves on the axle where the seal was rubbing. my question is that area suppose to be smooth as I suspect it is and is there away to fix it. anybody on here have an extra axle. thanks all info appreciated. norm

The grooves will likely show up on any used axle and may not be much better than yours. If you deal with a good bearing supply place you can ask if a seal is available with a speedy sleeve. Depending on how many years/hours you will be putting on your H4... I would fill the grooves with the best form of epoxy that you can sand with 400 paper after filing it size and get it smooth like new and I bet you would get years out of it. If you use some high quality epoxy be sure to clean the surface with rubbing alcohol to be sure you get good adhesion. Good luck!

If you have a machine shop that does metal spray ,they can under cut and build up with
a nickel bearing material that will last and not rust from the outside.
When Ed at crawler heaven was living , I sprayed many JD axles for him as wellas
some for my loader and dozer.

Out of the options listed above the speedy sleeve is the professional answer,it is the easiest and best,a good bearing supplier will be able to supply and fit it for you,it is a thin metal sleeve that fits over the shaft covering the ware grooves,I've used several of those on the crankshafts of engines and never had a comeback, the bearing shop will be able to supply the bearings and probably the seal too if you bring the old one in,you will also need some Loctite for the retaining bolt threads.
Good luck

That's some good information I had never thought about. I did find a good used one I am going to use but I did take the one to a local machine shop and they said they could smooth it out and put a sleeve on it for 120 so I may do that. also found an aftermarket seal so hopefully by wed I will have it all back together. The best thing is that the case and the bearings were okay. I was afraid the lack of oil might have damaged something. Thanks for the info. norm
