455 E operation Clutch or no clutch from reverse to forward

My 455E John Deere track loader is in the shop. The mechanic just told me that I am supposed to use the clutch to shift from reverse to forward high or low. It has hand levers for steering and it has a shifter for neutral and 1-4th gear. It has another shifter lever for Reverse and forward high and low. I use the clutch to shift from neutral to 1-4th gear, but I shift from neutral, reverse, or forward high or low with the other lever with out the clutch. Pretty sure that is what I was told when I bought it years ago and that is what I have always done. It shifts smoothly with out grinding or jerking with out using the clutch to shift between reverse and forward high and low. I would look in my manual but I left it with the mechanic. Some one who has used this machine please inform me of the proper operation of this machine.

Thanks

Is he saying like in push the clutch to the floor? If it has an HLR, which I believe it does, that's not the case. If the HLR needle valve is setup correctly you can shift forward to reverse and forward 2 to 1 or back without pressing anything.

I eventually got through to a John Deere dealer who told me no clutch was needed for reverse to forward high and low. Which is good since that is how I have been driving
it for years. I kind of thought it would grind or jump or something if I was doing it wrong. Thanks for the input.

Thanks

Dave
