These guys on here are all smarter than me, but I don't think it is normal. Whether the clutch is pushed in, or whether you are in reverse, the same set of planetaries is engaged. Hence, the noise is about the same. We have had an 870 here for years, and numerous other CASE tractors w/ the same P/S tranny and in reverse none of them make that high pitch whine that I just heard in the video. Have you looked at your filters for metal? Crack the drain plugs along the bottom of the tranny & diff housing and look also.

As I said in your other post I would describe it as gear clashing or chattering with a whine. Maybe somewhat like small gear sets are being spun fast with no oil. If I was asked to write what it sounds like I would say ..charr..chee.. chee-chee-chee, chee chee-chee.. again like a small gear is circling around another big gear very fast but possibly not always in perfect alignment. Best I can do. No luck with a video? To up load here I think they have to be short like 10 seconds. Otherwise you have to post it on YouTube and link it here.

That is a normal sound for a power shift.

Agree, normal sound of reverse in a Case Powershift of that era. A planetary set operates at a fairly high speed
In reverse on those. Thus all the warnings about not to leave it in the reverse position while doing stationary PTO work, proper lubrication to that gear set becomes an issue in that case.

If it's a power shift transmission that's normal, just do not leave it in reverse when it's sitting running
