830 transmission

I have a high hour (16000+) 1965 830 with the regular 8 speed. Tractor works fine in all gears but hangs up bad in 3rd in both ranges. Shifts into 3rd easily but then is an absolute bear to get out usually requiring pulling up on the shifter until you see stars while rocking the tractor with the clutch. Any guesses as to what I could be in to if I decide to tear it down?
Am considering putting a new clutch in but not sure how far I want to go. Not many jobs for it anymore sadly.

just noticed your raking straw for baling. actually dont see that done, not here anyway. as to the shifting i would think worn sifting rails or detents but on those i am not sure.

Detents on the shifting rail worn letting the shifter move too far into gear?? Or, isn't there a spring and ball that hits the detent and stops movement...spring broke or weak?

One way to confirm that it is or is not a clutch release problem is to put the tractor in the offending gear, then shut off the motor. If it comes out of gear easily with the engine off, likely the clutch is dragging.

Most of our straw gets baled due to lots of smaller livestock producers in the area. And most of it gets raked as we are wet in august here, so the only way we can get these big swaths dry is to ted them apart, and then the V rake shines bringing it back in for the baler.
