I can drive down the road a mile and then the brakes will half lock up and start smoking. What would cause this? thanks, Bill

The very first thing I would check is to see if the rocker assembly on top of the brake housing's rocker pins are seized not allowing the rocker to return to the down position, this was a common problem if they were not lubed down there.

There are some hydraulic issues that can cause this but let's look at the most likely first, things that can hold that rocker arm from returning.

This happened twice when I was driving down the road. Both times I drove for a mile without touching the brakes and all of a sudden
they automatically apply and lug the engine down like you just put your foot on the brake. Weird. Bill

Not really Hoofer, what happens is that the brakes are dragging because they are not completely released, as they warm they expand and drag harder and that cycle continues till they would eventually lock up, when they cool you could go again, just make sure they are releasing fully at the rocker arm on top of the brake housing. I have been down the road a few times with this issue, and we will deal with the first things first.

As Mel said the first thing to check is the rocker arms and make sure they are not sticking. Then I would check the line from the sump relief valve. I worked on one that had the line kinked and the brakes would come on, but on that tractor it took longer than a mile. I found the problem by parking the tractor with the engine running for a while and then the brakes were dragging as soon as I started to move it.

Yes, excessive sump pressure will jack the arms up, my purpose was to check what has been the most prevalent cause of this issue then move on from there.

Mel, I hope you did not take offense at my post. I totally agree to check the arms first. I have seen that problem too many times to count and the sump pressure only once.

No Doc, no offence taken here, we are all here to help, I am very easy going but once in a while someone will trip my trigger, when I give advice it is from a hands on in the past standpoint and to have someone say "well I just don't understand that " as one gent did recently riled me. When someone comes on looking for advice then rejects it outright, that to me is unacceptable. I just left them to flounder, taking components apart that were not the problem. But generally, it has been a satisfying experience passing on suggestions and once in a while getting a thank you both here and over on the Heavy Equipment forums.
