885 water pump seal

I am replacing the water pump seal on my 885 ,but having a hard time trying to fit it between the water pump and the head.I did took the water pump out ,but when I am pushing the pump up to get a good seal and trying to line it up so the screw holes line up it just wont seal. Its leaking bad after I put everything back together. Is there a easier way on doing this?

The only way I have had any luck doing one without having the head off, is to hinge the pump on one of the bolts. I also grease both iron surfaces with a dab of silicone for insurance.

RGMartin do you place the seal on the circle and push it up to make a seal with the head? Thanks for youe help.I am gonna try again to see if a I can get a good seal

I just saw one of your posts from a couple of years ago. Regarding the installation of the rubber seal on top of the water pump.
Is there a special way these need to be installed so they don't leak?
Do I just put some rtv top and bottom of the seal and push the pump up to enable bolts to be inserted?

I'm getting ready to replace the water pump on my 885. Did you have to remove the radiator to remove the pump? How did you end up sealing the leak on top of the pump? Thanks

I know your post was a couple of years ago. How did the installation work out? Any advice as I'm going to attempt this job next week. Thanks
