Case sickle bar mower

Hope someone can help my neighbor get a mower in the weeds working again, specifically the pitman arm. Currently he's using a ripped down 2x4 but that's not working well for him

Thanks much...Don.

You will need to use a strong hardwood for the pitman....something like white oak, hickory or black locust. Be sure it is free of knots and
straight grained. Also, if possible, use the original for a pattern, length is critical. Most construction 2x4s are spruce or other softwoods
that will not stand up to the stress.

Hi:

How did he make the replacement. Was it a copy of the old one or did they just rip a 2x4 to length. Hard wood is better but I have used spruce as well. It just depends on how much work you plan to put it thru. The original had a spring in the drive end to absorb the shock produced from the oscillating action without the spring the arm absorbs the shock and will break.

There was no pattern for the pitman arm. It had rotted away in the weeds. He ripped a plain old 2x4, guessed at the length. I have rough cut hickory drying in the barn. I will give him all he wants.

He's a Christmas tree farmer, had planned to only use it in the traffic lanes, hoping to reduce the amount of diesel used for mowing.

I will look to see if a spring exists.

Is there a way to determine the model of the mower? We found some numbers in the cast but he thinks its more of a part casting number vs. a model number.

Thanks for the help.
Much appreciated...Don.

I believe you can set the register as a
section just going past a set of guards in
both directions. Check out Webb cutting

Hi CatmanFS:

Good question.

Yes there is a reason. If something jams the knife you want something to break that you can replace, and you do not want the damage to extend to other areas.

As Loosehandle mentioned, the pitman arm has to be the exact correct length so that the knife sections begin and end just past the center of the guards. This is called register and is critical to cut well, so the grass or hay is cut off cleanly. Otherwise the hay will simply be chewed off and plug up or get pulled out by the roots. Don

I don't know if its the correct length, but he made one from hickory. He made 6 passes as a test. It did not break like the 2x did. Grass seems to be cut vs. pulled, laid down nicely. I've give him the update, maybe a small adjustment is needed.
