1956 Case 310 tractor

I have a 1956 Case 310 with the eagle hitch. The pto shaft is rounded off. Do I have to take the the rear cover plate off to change it out? I'm a little stumped. I have a repair manual which shows how to do about everything but this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As you can see in the parts breakdown it
will be necessary to remove the housing.
When you do, the whole PTO drive shaft
comes out with the housing. There are seals
at the end of that shaft that can start
leaking if care is not taken on reassembly.
If you need further help, just ask.

When you unbolt the cover and pull the PTO straight back and out, this is what you end up with. The shaft is about 42 inch long. The PTO shaft passes through a seal at the rear of the transmission main drive shaft in the final drive void that prevents the torque tube hydraulic oil from migrating into the 4 speed transmission. That seal may be damaged pulling the shaft especially if it is old. It is advisable to renew the seal while the PTO shaft is out. Joe

This is a 1956 310. The seal I was referring to. You need to pull the Eagle hitch rock shaft housing to access the final drive area.

How heavy is the eagle hitch rock shaft assembly?

I have no idea. I'm doing this by myself
in a field. The pto shaft should be here
today. It should be an experience. I'm no
mechanic but I'm hoping it all comes out
ok.

Do not attempt this in the field. It will turn into a cluster. Will the tractor drive on its own to a shed?. You will need to lift the rockshaft cover, a block and tackle is the minimum tooling you will need.CM

No way to move it. It has to be done where it sits. I can possibly find an engine hoist to use but that's about it.

Rock shaft housing is too heavy & awkward for one person in my opinion. If you take the lift arms off it might be doable if youre not a runt like me. I have always used a shop crane.

If your going to do it in the field definitely get something to lift the rock shaft housing and a means to protect the tractor from weather as for field work this is not likely going to be a one day job and may take multiple days. Whether you replace the PTO shaft seal or not you should pull the rock shaft housing, the probability of blindly reinstalling the PTO long shaft through the seal, bushing, and into the center of the transmission main shaft w/o damage is not worth the risk. This is the PTO shaft seal assembly. The bushing is pressed into the ID of the transmission main shaft end, the seal housing is pressed OD on the transmission main shaft end, and the seal is pressed into the seal housing. This whole assembly is not all that robust and if you damage that seal all the hydraulic oil in the torque tube will end up in the transmission.

This is what you will see from the PTO opening.

With the rock shaft housing removed. You can easily lift the PTO housing with right hand and guide the long shaft splines through the seal with left hand via the rock shaft housing opening and push the shaft on through the transmission main shaft.

Its helpful to have a few long studs to rest the housing on to finish pushing the shaft shoulder into the seal & bushing and mating the splines to the coupling.

Thank you so much. I'll take the time to make sure everything stays clean. I'll use all of your useful ideas. I might be able to get someone to help with the installation. I'm so glad I asked about this otherwise I'd have been in trouble.
