It looks like Ive found a project in the shape of a DB 995 4wd. My first challenge is going to be getting it home. It has the Carraro axle and one hub appears to be leaking and have a little play. I fully intend to pull it apart and fix it but I was thinking of topping up the fluid and driving it an hour or so home. How terrible of an idea is this? This will be my first DB and my first old mfwd, many more questions will follow, Im sure. Thanks.

How much play is "A little". Sloppy at the steering pins or at the wheel bearings?

Leaks are normal for DBs. even on the Italian axles. my 1494 takes a pint or so a year. Not worth fixing for me at this point.

The play is in the wheel bearing (s?). It might amount to
1/4-3/8 at the outside of the tire. I picked the front end
up with the loader and spun the wheel, it feels smooth
but I can see the signs of leakage and so I checked and
found a little play. The steering pins seem to be good. I
would like to drive it home (paved roads) but dont want
to wreck a planetary. I do plan on topping up the oil level
before I drive it. Thanks, Sam

I would agree to driving it home. First top off the oil in the leaky hub, and make sure you have the wrench, and some spare oil on board, and a way to get it into the hub.
You'll soon see if it's leaking out. If so, stop when necessary and top it off again.
If you're really concerned, stop once in a while and feel the hubs for heat. Compare the suspect hub with the good hub.
