830 head gasket

Thank you everyone for all the help with my stuck pump, the 830 lives! On to the next chapter. I have a head gasket that needs replacing. The front head is dumping oil ironically down behind the injector pump at a pretty good rate. Any thoughts before I dive in? Is this a common one and is it pretty straight forward? Thank you

Okay. Ill give my 2cents. Ive worked on numerous 830 diesels and you have a 50/50 shot of having a cracked head. Be very careful and check in between the intake and exhaust valves. Better yet have a machine shop mag flux it just to be sure. I dont know what shop manual says but I always retorque 30 series heads at warmed up temperature. Avoids issues like you have now. Good luck

Keep in mind: In the early 30 series tractors, Case didn't have sleeve protrusion nailed down too precisely. The earlier engines thus had a different style of head gasket than the later ones. The earlier style had separate fire rings, which were available in different thicknesses to accommodate different sleeve protrusions, while the later ones were one-piece, with the fire-rings incorporated into the gasket and only one thickness of fire ring available.

Anywhere you search for parts is only going to list the later style (one piece) gasket. The old ones and separate fire rings are available, but they're more expensive and it takes some creative searching on the Case parts sites to find them (they're listed under the engines, not the tractors).

Looks like yours is a later model, so probably not an issue, but it's something to keep in mind. If doing a full rebuild, you can use the new style of gasket as long as you make sure sleeve protrusion is correct. If just replacing the gasket and nothing else, you probably want to note what style of gasket comes off, and measure sleeve protrusion to see if it's more than spec. Don't assume your block is pooched if you put it back together and it starts leaking oil into the crankcase - could just be the wrong gasket.
