I have an old case 580ck not sure of the exact year. No backhoe on it but it's got the 188D in it. When I try to start it all it does is spin, it might try cranking for a little bit but not enough to get it going. I've replaced the ignition switch and the starter solenoid but now I'm wondering where to go from here. Any suggestions?

So the starter spins but the engine doesn't crank over? Sounds like a problem with the starter gear kicking out too soon or not engaging. Have you pulled the starter out of it?

That's what I was thinking and I pulled the starter off. Everything looked good in there as far as I can tell.

Just looking may not show the problem. It could be the starter drive, or it could be a problem with the solenoid pulling it in. If you are not familiar with starter repair, I suggest you take it to a shop that repairs them or take it to a parts store, like NAPA, where they should be able to match it up and get an exchange replacement.

While you have it off it is a good idea to check the condition of the teeth on the ring gear. You can use a screwdriver on the teeth to pry the flywheel around so you can check it all.

After a cup of coffee and rereading your post. If you replaced the solenoid, mounted on the starter, the drive is the next likely failure point. The plunger and linkage were rust free and moving freely when tested while removed? The drive should snap fully out when tested.
