I need assistance in determining approximate range for engine rebuild costs for a Case 580c.

I found one for sale online for about $6500 with bad engine, but have no idea what additional costs might be incurred for an engine would be. Just looking for range.

The add reads:

condition: good
make / manufacturer: Case
model name / number: 580C

Case 580 backhoe (bad motor) must sell
New tires, hoses, master cylinder and brakes. Has foot petals for side to side back bucket movement

Any advise would be appreciated.
 

It depends on what needs to be done to the bad engine. Worst case would be you need to find a different engine. I will guess you could get from 3,000 to 7,000 dollars into it depending on what it needs and how you handle it. I would keep looking for a running machine, even if it cost more. Just my thoughts, others will vary.
 
A neighbor put 10K in a almost seized 580C backhoe motor a few years ago, they did a good job but wow.If you can get that kind of value in using it sure why not, it will work out in the end, but if it is an occasional user that you will some day sell, I'd look for
something different, there are decent used running machines for less money.

I've seen in-frame engine kits are under $900. That's new pistons, liners, etc. I think bearings are included too. Add to that head work, and crank grinding if needed. I don't think it'll be out of this world,
and you can probably do it all in the tractor.
 
Depends what they mean by a bad engine. It
could mean a busted crankshaft, rod through
the block or might be as simple as a problem
in the injection pump or injectors.
Definition of a bad engine can be
misunderstood or someone knowing of a major
problem and just saying has a bad engine as
a cover the bases quote. Or they may not
really know, just my thoughts
