VAO only firing with starter

49 VAO. Good, clean carb; brand new battery; bright spark at each plug. It fires fine as long as I'm cranking on the starter, then dies as soon as I let off the button. Anyone got any ideas?

Where is your power for the ignition switch coming from? If it's from the starter button, it's probably hooked to the side that only has power when the button is pushed. Get a test light and see if you have power to the coil with switch on not cranking, then same test cranking. That should narrow down the problem

I'm not sure on a VAO but it is usually beside the coil. A piece of white porcelain about 1x3. One end may have two wires under one screw & the other end has one wire under a screw. Get back to us on what you find. Gerald

Try hot wiring it. If it runs hot wired then you have a problem with the wiring some or a bad switch if the switch is also the starter switch

Doing that should nt blow out anything. I'd check and make sure the battery is not way over charged. Should read 12.5 volts give or take a little bit. Or the charging system is bad and putting out to much voltage

One other reason hot wiring it might have blown out the point and condenser is if you hook the hot wire to the wrong side of the coil which would put a full 12 volts to the point stead of through the coil.

Neither of my tractors have anything like that. The coil is in it's bracket mounted to a strap of metal running across the sheet metal to one of the studs holding the valve cover on. A wire runs from starter button to the Off side of the power switch, then from the On side of the power switch to the coil. The other wire off the coil runs to the side of the distributer.

Okay 6 volts then you didn't say which it was ut either way if hot wiring blew the points and condenser you hook the hot wire to the wrong side of the coil. Which will cause them to blow out

Did you check the wire to the ignition switch from the starter button as was mentioned by J Hamilton? Sounds like it is on the wrong side of the starter button. Should be on the terminal that the battery cable is hooked to. If it is on the starter wire terminal and you hot wired from the battery to the coil and happened to have the switch on, you would have a lot of sparks and probably burn the wire in to. It would try to engage the starter.

I apologize for not making that clear. I forgot that some have been converted, and it confused me when you said 12 volts! I will double check the wiring diagram next time I'm where the tractor is.

I pulled this diagram off an old thread of this forum. The only difference is my VAO is negative ground. What else needs to change on this to work for that (to make sure I've got all the wires in the right place)

Oops, it didn't work the first try!
