Hello I bought this 22 with engine issues ( O rings on the sleeves leaking because silicone had been used when installed ,with very low hours on the overhaul it still had the hone marks in the cylinders ) ( why would they overhaul the engine with trans issues ) any way I got it running and drove it around power shift works as it should , I have 1,2 & 3 but when I shift to 4 th it just lightly grinds, I disconnected the shift cable from the shift lever it was a little out of adjustment , I put a vise grip on the shift lever, moved the lever both ways good detent , set cable , still no 4th ( I did pull back on the lever and it did move the tractor a little ways then it slipped ) . My ?? is is there any internal adjusting that can be done through the side cover or will this be a complete tear down to replace the shift collar ,or could the inner shift lever be wore?? Thanks Bryan

Apparently you have the 3 speed power shift driving into a 4 speed range transmission. As the pictures show, the range transmission has no synchronizers and it is a stop and shift situation. Without synchronizers, I think a moderate amount of gear grinding should be expected under certain conditions. It helps to get to know what needs to be done in order to minimize the gear grinding---idle down---allow time for the inertia to stop rotating etc.

I am thinking that either the 4th gear shift collar teeth are only partially engaging OR that there is enough wear and damage on the 4th gear shift collar teeth for it to overcome its detent and slide out of gear. If either is the situation you should see some movement of the engaging shift lever move back towards a neutral position. If the engagement is partial, the lever's movement back towards neutral should be less than if it is sliding out of full engagement. Perhaps looking thru the cover plate will shed some light on your situation. Good luck getting it fixed.

OOPS I notice reference is made to paragraphs 249 and 250 also fig 251. Maybe less significant but here is that info that might clarify the task.
