1972 Case 470

Well this has been an eventful learning curve for me! Lets start with the obvious the three point must come off and be flipped over then the end plate that faces the shifter must be bumped back at least a half inch to get access to the snap ring holding the whole thing together. Once you have the snap ring out you will need a long board to gently knock the piston and retaining plate out towards the shifter. After these are out diagnosis is fairly straight forward the factory O ring will most likely be broken down and degraded to the point of distigration (look for pieces in the cylinder). Now the fun begins, the wide flat seal is still available from some tractor parts suppliers I got mine from Messicks close to home. You can find yours online or at your favorite farm supply store near you. You will also need an acceptable replacement for the round wide O ring that deteriorates thus passing pressure through to the return line to the hy trans reservoir. Mine blew out twice because I didn't understand the essence of the problem that the piston had high pressure blow by. I used two different O rings from Amazon suggested by a video on a 430 eagle hitch and they worked like a charm! Two of the skinny ones on the outsides of the ring groove and one fat one in the center. You will then need a piston ring compressor to bump the piston back into the cylinder. Replace the O ring on the retainer plate end with another of the skinny rings and reassemble the whole mess and you should be good as new!

If the cylinder bore is scuffed as bad as the gouges in that piston you have a lot of work ahead of you with a cylinder hone. Feel the part of the bore and get it as smooth as possible

That is not the correct seal assembly and the O Rings will fail. 1st off, the wide ring is not a seal but is on the piston to act as a guide.
Next, there is a 1 piece A36442 Seal that fits correctly in the Seal Ring Groove. That is quite a conglomeration I see there now.

Agree with mEL,those are some pretty serious scars on the Piston. very hard on the new o rings.ball home and Emory cloth.

Thanks for the advice and info I have ordered the correct seal now that I know the number and gotten 2 of them as well as an extra "guide ring". Just in case it ever goes out again I will have another rebuild set of rings!

I appreciate the advice mEL I will do that while I have it torn down one more time to replace the "O-rings" with the correct seal as provided by Mr. Saeli!

I'm gonna do it when I crack it open again to put the correct seal in this time! I'm guessing the scarring came from the original seal breakdown? I had chunks missing out of it everywhere and debris in the cylinder from it breaking down. Pretty sure there was plenty of slop as it blew out three lines I put in there with blowby pressure. Thanks for the input and help everyone I really appreciate getting the info not found in all the manuals I have on this tractor!!

Well I've tried to purchase this seal from external_link which I garner is your store Mr. Saeli, everytime I try to order and get to payment method it tells me no available payment methods for my state? I'm in Pa. one state down from you any advice as to how to order in spite of your site?

I apologize for tagging onto this thread, but I just dis-assembled my Case 530 3pt. lift assembly this weekend. I am getting ready to put the correct #36442 seal onto the piston. I did one years ago, but don't remember the tricks I used to get the really small seal onto the much larger piston and into the groove without damage. Any good advice out there. Thanks
