Case VAC 14 locked up

Hey everyone! So I was out mowing my horse pasture with my 56 case VAC 14 when all of a sudden it stopped and died so I shut the pro off and turned all switches and lights off ( thought I might have done something to the engine) went to start it back up and fired up without hesitation when I tried to shift into gear it wouldn't move just wanted to stall out in every gear and even in neutral. It would only run with the clutch pressed in. So my question is where do I begin? It was full on 80 90 oil in the transmission the only thing I can come up with is the PTO caused something to lock it up. Any help would be great. Thanks

If you had shifted gear it could be in 2 gears at once which would lock it up. Or a bearing could have gone out in a place like the input shaft or other such thing. Jack up one side and see if you can turn the tire with it in neutral

So I can't get my jack in the middle of the pasture so I pulled the shift plate off all the gears seem to be fine ( the best I can tell with my phone s flashlight and limited sunlight) the gears that the shifter moves operate great and I could easily move it into neutral. Inspected the shift forks they don't look bent or broken. So with it in neutral I mounted the shift plate back on and started the tractor when I released the clutch it continues to run so I put it in first and started to drive and moved about 3 feet to try second gear and then it wouldn't move again just like it did before I started working on it.

Thanks for your input

Are you shifting on the fly as in while moving?? If you are good chance when you try to go from 1st to 2nd it stays in 1st and goes into 2nd and locks up due to being in 2 gears at the same time. A tractor is made to stop to shift to a higher or lower gear never shift with it moving or it can cause all sorts of problems

Does the PTO still work? It may have broke some teeth off of the gears and they are lodging in the bottom of the rear end with the bull gears. The PTO gears are not very strong and will break teeth if you hit something. Have also had the same symptoms several times when we have broke teeth off the bull gears. Usually you can back up a little and go again for a short distance. Lee

Also should have mentioned if the PTO has shed some teeth and they are still in the PTO housing they can cause the problem with it locking up even in neutral. The PTO drives off the transmission main shaft which is turning anytime the clutch is engaged. The PTO is probably the first thing I would check. Will need to drain about 3 gallons of oil before you pull it, otherwise you will have a mess. It holds 7 total. Drain plug is underneath beside the front drawbar mount. Nothing special about removing it. Everything will remain intact when you pull it out. Send me an email if you have any questions about removing it. Lee

Thanks again for everyone's input after a few times of scratching my head I found a bearing that failed just behind the bell housing where the input shaft goes through to the clutch I found it by removing the access panel where a belt drive may go on the right side just Infront of the brake pedals
