66 530ck Power shuttle acts strange

So I got this not too long ago.I changed the shuttle fluid and it seemed to have better pushing power. Enough that I broke the poorly welded loader tower. I have fixed that now.

I used it for 3 hours today and noticed that sometimes when I release the clutch pedal the trans has good power instantly. Other times it takes maybe a second and then you can feel like something engages and it has power. The direct drive works well once it is moving.

Converter gauges do not work on this

I checked the fluid level while running on the level after it was warmed up and if anything the fluid was a little high.

A few times today I had to use low range just to be able to back up as the high range didn't have any power in reverse. Low range holds fine in reverse but likes to pop out in forward.

Any tips on what I should do to fix this?

TIA

No one has any ideas on this?
I was hoping someone might have had some idea where to start

a1, the 530 tractor has a standard mechanical shuttle behind a Torque Converter that is equipped with a direct drive lockup clutch, so technically it is not a power shuttle as compared to the later series 580s which allowed on the go F&R, shifting in them was by hydraulic clutches. To see what is going on you need the dash gauge or a good hand held gauge plumbed int the Tee where the existing small pressure gauge line is attached. The pressure should be constant and should respond as soon as the clutch pedal is released. I have seen the pressure regulator piston get sticky in it's bore. If you see a hesitation of the pressure coming up when the clutch is released, that could be a cause.

Thanks for that explanation. That helps me understand it a bit better.
I suspected a sticky valve somewhere. I will get a gauge and see what is going on.

Lots of little things to do on this thing to get it back in good shape but, I think it will be worth it

keep up with the updates as you progress. There are plenty of minds on here that will help you along. BTW, the lo range popping out was a common issue with them when they were much newer. There were hardware updates to keep the rear collar that supports the lo range gear and keeps it forward, early models had a snap rin that held a collar and the snap ring would pop out, a redesigned collar had a cut in it to capture the snap ring and not allow it to expand to get out of the groove. I would be surprised if yours did not have that setup.

Thanks for the info.
I am hoping to get some time tomorrow to look at the tractor some.
I have to do an oil pan gasket to it also. It is leaking pretty bad and when I tried to snug the bolts, one of them was already stripped and a bunch more were really loose.

Luckily I have a pan gasket left from when I rebuilt the dozer engine

Check the pan carefully for cracks. that was very frequent on those models and the fact the bolts are stripped says someone else has visited there before.

Thanks,
I will check it once I get it off.

I pressure washed it again today in preparation of pulling the pan and checking the clutch pressure regulator.

So of course after I pressure washed it and let it dry...I HAD to use it for a project :D
