430 rear end noise

I thought I was worked up to buy a 430 near me. The guy said he started it up today and now there is a loud noise in the rear end. I asked him to be more specific and he said when the triple range was in neutral no noise. I didn't even think the triple range had a neutral as such. Any common thing anyone can think of on these tractors that would make the noise? Thanks all.

I guess if it was me. Id personally go and check out the tractor, then you would have a better idea on what the problem could be.
I have a 1961 431 diesel triple range and there is no neutral position on the triple range shift lever.

I have a 351 and thing the same. His terminology must be off. I am working toward looking at it even with the noise. I think somewhere someone posted about some part can come loose and fall in by the gears, but that has been a while ago.

I could be wrong about the neutral position. If I remember, without actually going to look at my tractor, direct is back, high is forward, and low is in between, then move lever to the right and forward.
But the triple range lever is forward of the 4 speed transmission. I guess Im wondering how that would relate to the rear end noise.

On my 430, low is back, and then the shifter moves left or right and forward to get high and drive, so there is a neutral of sorts.

If there is no noise when the triple is in neutral, what happens when you put the triple in any position, low, drive or high, and the 4 speed in neutral?

In the hi lo direct box you come back to neutral to slide the lever out to get the 3rd range so there is a neutral position where none of the 3 are in mesh.

When the lever is lifted upward from direct drive, it goes to "no-gear position". From that point it either goes up to high, or out and up to low. The gears can make more noise if the oil level gets low, and with a bad pto seal inside on the housing, the oil leaks into the rear end with the tractor just setting.

The guy knows his way around Case. He admitted the seal leaks between the triple and the gearbox. He admitted he has to add to one and drain off the other every six mo. I suggested he check the oil in triple to see if it was empty as he hadn't run the tractor for quite a while. Waiting to hear back. Thanks all.

If it has a bent shift fork it will cause gear grinding/noise even with the 4 speed in "N" and will stop of the triple/dual range is put in "N" both styles have a "N" may or may not be the problem but I have seen it more than once

Nutty, are you talking about the fork on the triple range or the main tranny. Thanks for the info

either could do it but where it stops when the triple is in "N" my money would be on the 4 speed,, if the noise stops when driving it in a certain gear that should the the fork causing the problem if it still does it in all 4 and R then it may be a bad bearing and or damaged gears
